How are we affected by living at , alternatively visiting, high altitudes? 

The human body adjusts to a lower accessibility of oxygen, but it takes time - between a few days and up to several weeks. This process is called acclimatization. When the body is exposed to higher altitudes than it is used to it will react by:

  • Urinating more often
  • Waking up often during the night
  • Hyperventilate
  • Change its breathing pattern 
  • Experiencing shortness of breath 

The International Society for Mountain Medicine - ISMM - works since 1985 to unite in the

"teaching and research of all aspects of mountain medicine" (quoted from ismm.org).

The goals of the ISMM is to run an organization of scientific character and ecourage research, discussions, studies and publications covering aspects of mountain people as well as mountaineers and - as an extension - mountain medicine.
